Just as the reformers had once departed Beth Elohim, now the objecting minority resigned to form a new Orthodox congregation, Shearith Israel, splitting Charleston Jewry into Reform and Orthodox factions. 7 During the period in which Charleston reformers tried to retain the basic beliefs of their religion while modulating Jewish practice to appeal to their Americanized co-religionists who lacked a knowledge of Judaism, their timing was ahead of their fellow Jews. In a few short years the Reform movement they inaugurated would be bolstered by a wave of reform-minded immigrant Jews from Germany.

From thirteen states, thirty-four congregations possessing close to 2,000 members responded to the summons in 1873 to form the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Two years later Isaac Wise began his duties as the volunteer part-time head of Hebrew Union College, which ordained four American-trained rabbis in the first graduating class of 1883. 14 More than a hundred congregations sent delegates to the ceremonies for the ordination, which were marred by the inclusion of shrimp at the lavish graduation dinner.
