2 Since Tula was an industrial center, renowned for its munitions, bread-Âmaking, and metal industries, Bogdanov’s educational efforts focused not on peasants, who were the main target of the populist enlightenment campaign, but on factory workers. He began teaching at workers’ schools and learning circles. This work inspired Bogdanov’s move from populism to Marxism, which considered the proletariat the leading force in the future socialist revolution. In 1897, he published the lectures he had been delivering at workers’ schools as a Short Course of Economic Science, which became the most popular textbook on Marxist political economy in the early twentieth century, with nine printings appearing in as many years (Bogdanov 1897).

Furthermore, two of Bogdanov’s university professors seem likely candidates for advising, inspiring, and encouraging him in this endeavor. 10 Anfimov received his first degree from the St. Petersburg University School of Natural Sciences and a second from the Military-ÂMedical Academy. For several years, he worked as a physician and at the same time prepared a doctoral dissertation on the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system. In 1887, after the successful defense of his dissertation, he became a lecturer (privat-Âdozent) at the VMA department of nervous and psychiatric diseases.
