Each episode is inextricably tied to the ways in which our identities get mapped onto our bodies as we relate to and interact with others.

This refinement of the construct has led to subsequent research using the same multidimensional model to measure specific strands of group consciousness—specifically, race and gender consciousness. The work of Richard Shingles (1981), Ethel Klein (1984), Patricia Gurin (1985), Pamela Conover (1988), Elizabeth Cook (1989), Clyde Wilcox (1990, 1997), Katherine Tate (1994), Michael C. Dawson (1994), and Claudine Gay and Katherine Tate (1998) have proven useful in assessing the implications of group consciousness for public opinion and political behavior despite the limitations inherent to their methodological approaches.
