The well known differences between heifers and cows with respect to problem births have also been observed. 7%. 1% are due to stillbirths. The reviewers had no access to data from EEC countries not mentioned. CONCLUSION It must be re-emphasised here that the reviewers cannot provide a representative view of the overall situation in the EEC countries. However, it does appear that the factors influencing the incidence of problem births and calf mortality in dairy and dualpurpose cattle breeds are similar in all EEC countries.
However, Charolais bulls increase the mean frequency of dystocic calvings (10 to 15%), but with large differences between bulls; early calf mortality is only slightly increased. In the suckling cows of these beef breeds, essentially managed in purebreeding, the frequencies of calving problems are comparable with those observed previously with the same breeds in beef crossing: purebred or crossbred Hereford cows calve as easily as do dairy cows, whereas Charolais cows exhibit substantially greater calving difficulties (about twice as many dystocic calvings).
