Just as the two fifth forms established in 1959 changed the nature of the school, so Newsom gave a very powerful drive off a different launching pad.
Drama and art and music always were extra curricula in stage shows of one kind or another. But a play like Peterloo, about the 1819 massacre, written by the 22 Curriculum explorations head of English, with its rousing, rising words ‘We will overcome’ sung again and again was like an extended extended day, such was its impact on the school as a whole. David and the Donkey, a Christmas play written by Tony Brown in 1965 had similar impact. Later it was put on in Drury Lane.
