Creating time While CSE, GCE and Room 1 were going on in the foreground, in the background there was Newsom and the Schools Council. It was not long however before the background took over the foreground. Just as the two fifth forms established in 1959 changed the nature of the school, so Newsom gave a very powerful drive off a different launching pad.

Drama and art and music always were extra curricula in stage shows of one kind or another. But a play like Peterloo, about the 1819 massacre, written by the 22 Curriculum explorations head of English, with its rousing, rising words ‘We will overcome’ sung again and again was like an extended extended day, such was its impact on the school as a whole. David and the Donkey, a Christmas play written by Tony Brown in 1965 had similar impact. Later it was put on in Drury Lane. These contributions to pupils’ learning are not quantifiable, but powerful they are.

It was risky because there was no way of trying it out first before introducing it and neither was there any way of providing adequate preparation for staff. Success or failure was in the hands of the enthusiastic staff who had suggested the idea in the first place. They succeeded and work it did and in ways which no one predicted. It was staff development on the hoof as recalled by one member of staff: The decision is a good example of what is now fashionably called evidence based practice. But note the space left for staff judgement.
