As a mode of communication, projective identification is one in which the subject makes himself or herself understood by exerting pressure on another person to experience a set of feelings similar to his or her own. Projective identification is a primitive kind of object relatedness in which the subject experiences the object of the projection as separate enough to serve as a receptacle for parts of the self but sufficiently undifferentiated to maintain the illusion that one is literally sharing a given feeling with another person.
She notes that doctors who themselves needed denial also found INTERACTIONAL PERSPECTIVES 19 it in their patients. Physicians capable of discussing terminal illness created conditions in which patients could address their concerns about death and dying. The patient's need for denial, she concluded, was in direct proportion to the doctor's need for denial. Studies by Rothenberg (1961) and Waxenberg (1966) show that physicians commonly facilitate denial in cancer patients by their tendency to discourage such patients' communication about themselves, their illness, and its consequences.
